Sadly, there are a number of ‘clone firms’ who are using altered versions of our name (e.g. ‘Step to Change’ or ‘Step Changing’) and other charities’ names to convince people they’re genuine debt advice services. They’re not genuine. They’re scams, and they need to be stopped NOW.

Does StepChange take fees?
DMPs from StepChange Debt Charity are fee-free. We’ll work with you to establish a budget that meets your household’s needs. If a DMP’s right for you we’ll help you set up and manage it, at no cost to you.
How do step change make money?
We receive money from StepChange Voluntary Arrangements which arranges and supervises individual voluntary arrangements. The firm earns fees that are agreed with the creditors at the outset of the arrangement and which are deducted from the subsequent distributions made to those creditors.

If an IVA is right for you, we can help you set up your arrangement through our own IVA company, StepChange Voluntary Arrangements. We won’t charge you for the advice and support we provide before your IVA is set up.

Is Step Change confidential?
Whether you’re new to us, or already a client, we’re committed to keeping your details confidential, safe and secure. We want your experience with us to be as stress free as possible, so we want to be clear about how we’ll ask for information and how you should send it.
Do StepChange need bank statements?
This can be your last 2 months payslips, a benefits letter or a bank statement. If you are sending bank statements, please circle the relevant information. Please make sure you include any gas, electricity, water, rent arrears, council tax arrears and benefit overpayments.
How long does it take for step change?
We’ll send out these payments within five working days. Creditors will usually receive these payments the same day we send them, but if a creditor has asked to receive payments by cheque it can take a few days more to be processed.
