Can you bypass the AC compressor with a serpentine belt?
The compressor cannot be bypassed without the use of a compressor bypass pulley. It would cost more for a bypass for the compressor than it would be to just replace the compressor pulley. Install a new pulley or pulley bearing if it can come off of the compressor and then put on a new belt.
Can I bypass AC compressor with shorter belt?
Yes, this is possible. However, unless it was the AC compressor clutch and pulley which failed, bypassing the AC pulley is unnecessary. Simply disconnect the wire to the AC compressor clutch and that should do the trick.
What happens when you bypass AC compressor?
Simply put, the bypass pulley spins with far less rolling resistance than your factory AC compressor. This increases your engine’s power output and, at the same time, allows you to dress up your engine bay.
What is an air conditioning bypass pulley?
An AC bypass pulley is a free spinning pulley used to replace the AC compressor on an automotive engine. When the AC compressor goes bad in a vehicle, a consumer often will choose to install an AC bypass pulley. Once installed the vehicle will no longer have air conditioning.
Can I use a smaller serpentine belt?
Belts can be tricky, so we usually recommend buying two or three different slightly shorter belts so that you can test fit each one. Most vehicles have a spring tensioner that puts tension on the serpentine belt.
Can I just remove my AC compressor?
The a/c compressor cannot be permanently removed because the serpentine belt powers all accessories, including the compressor, in one “circuit”. If you were to take the compressor out you won’t be able to install the serpentine belt because a key component will just not be there.
Can you run a car without an AC compressor?
You will be fine as long as you don’t need or want AC in your car. Your AC pulley is a free spinning pulley that has a clutch on it. It will spin freely until you turn the air conditioning on. If the clutch doesn’t work properly, you will still be able to drive your car.
Are serpentine belts interchangeable?
There is no point in interchanging them, certainly not based on a small price difference. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
