Does the Gates Scholarship require recommendation letters?
You’ll be notified and provided an additional application to complete. This portion of the application will require you to: complete another, more in-depth questionnaire, submit your updated transcripts, provide letters of recommendation (typically 2), and complete several short essays.
How do you become a Gates Millennium Scholar?
To apply, students must be:
- A high school senior.
- From at least one of the following ethnicities: African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native*, Asian & Pacific Islander American, and/or Hispanic American.
- Pell-eligible.
- A US citizen, national, or permanent resident.

What is the Gates Millennium Scholars Program?
The GMS Program is more than just a scholarship. GMS offers Gates Millennium Scholars with Academic Empowerment (ACE) services to encourage academic excellence; mentoring services for academic and personal development; and an online resource center that provides internship, fellowship and scholarship information.
When will I be notified if I’m selected as a Gates Scholar?
Mid-March to May: Finalists are notified if they were selected as Gates Millennium Scholars or not selected, beginning mid-March. All selected Gates Millennium Scholars are notified by no later than May.
Who is eligible to apply for the Gates Scholarship Program?
Our scholarship program was available to incoming freshmen students who had completed the application process and been selected as Gates Scholar prior to entering college. If you were enrolled as a degree-seeking student, unfortunately you were not eligible to apply for the GMS program.
