Are McGowen barrels cut or button?
We are working on cut barrels with the highest degree of accuracy manufactured with 21st Century digital perfection.
Are McGowen barrels button rifled?
All McGowen barrels are precision button rifled, stress relieved and hand lapped to ensure consistency and ease of cleaning. Pricing is dependent upon the make up of the barrel. This includes whether it is turned (contoured) or not, length of the barrel and additions such as octagon or fluting.
How does copper fouling affect accuracy?
Copper, smeared on steel, can corrode the steel if there’s moisture present. This creates pits, which do a superior job of gouging jackets as bullets pass over them. Very often, a copper-fouled barrel will shoot OK until it’s cleaned, and then it won’t shoot worth a damn.
What is single point cut rifling?
Single Point Cut Rifling Also referred to as Hook Rifling, this is a metal cutting process that uses a carbide “hook” to cut a single groove in the barrel. The process requires several passes to cut the groove to its final depth.
How often should you remove copper fouling?
Clean it when you notice its loosing accuracy (this will be far more than 20-30 rounds). These guys that clean a rifle after a couple dozen shots are nuts. If your rifle is a 1/2 MOA shooter, and one day you notice it wont shoot better than 3/4 MOA, time to clean.
What is copper fouling in a barrel?
If you see gold/copper streaks, that’s copper fouling in the barrel. The presumption is that the bore fouls along its entire length, so if its fouled at the muzzle its fouled along its entire length. It certainly works when I look inside the muzzle of my 7WSM and my . 308.
What is the best kind of rifling?
Button rifling is well suited to mass-production methods with high output. Button rifling leaves a smooth, bright finish inside the barrel that need not be lapped. Button-rifled barrels are very accurate. Bore and groove dimensions are very consistent.
