Does perlite dissolve?
Perlite softens when it reaches temperatures of 850–900 °C (1,560–1,650 °F). Water trapped in the structure of the material vaporises and escapes, and this causes the expansion of the material to 7–16 times its original volume.
What is unexpanded perlite?
Unexpanded Raw Perlite Ore is an amorphous volcanic glass that has a relatively high water content, typically formed by the hydration of obsidian. It occurs naturally and has the unusual property of greatly expanding when heated sufficiently.
Is perlite toxic to humans?
Perlite is a naturally occurring silicous rock and as such, is not toxic. Perlite is used in horticultural, construction and industrial applications. Ingesting the products that incorporate perlite may cause illness and, in excessive amounts, permanent harm or death.
Does perlite need to be rinsed?
I wash it after sieving it to get some of the dust off, and to knock the smaller particles away if it was sieved while damp enough to be sticky. All it takes is a quick rinse/blast, so if you have a small sieve and a hose you can get everything set up and make a production line of it.
Can perlite be reused?
Lightweight, sterile, and easy to use, perlite is popular with greenhouse growers. But because salt and pathogen buildup can occur when perlite is reused, it must be replaced every year or two to minimize the risk of crop failure.
How much heat can perlite take?
The maximum temperature that perlite can withstand is 2,300º F (1,260º C).
What is better perlite or vermiculite?
Remember this general rule of thumb: Use perlite when you want better drainage and aeration. Use vermiculite when you want more moisture retention.
