Do you have to pay back Youth Allowance?
Youth allowance is not paid back. Students have to repay the start-up loan through the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) when income exceeds the minimum repayment threshold, as you would with the Higher Education Loan Programme (HELP) debts. How do I know if I’m eligible for Youth Allowance?
To get Youth Allowance as a student or an Australian Apprentice you must be one of the following: 18 to 24 and studying full time. 16 to 24 and doing a full time Australian Apprenticeship. 16 to 17 and independent or needing to live away from home to study.
Can you get Youth Allowance if you live away from home?

Can I work while on Youth Allowance?
You can earn money while you get Austudy or Youth Allowance. But how much you earn will affect your payment. We’ll start to reduce your payment if your income is over $452 a fortnight. The Income Bank can help you keep more of your payment.
Can a 15 year old get Centrelink?
A young person aged 15 years old may qualify for YA if they are independent and have reached the minimum school leaver age in their state/territory. Dependent young people undertaking full-time secondary study are NOT considered to be of YA age until they turn 18, unless they: are independent.
Can a 16 year old get Centrelink?
Your child may be eligible for a payment in their own right once they turn 16 or 18. This depends on their circumstances. They may be able to get Youth Allowance if they’re either: looking for full time work.
How much does Centrelink pay per child?
It’s a yearly payment. If you’re eligible, you’ll get it after we balance your payments. We do this after the end of the financial year. For the 2020-21 financial year, it’s a payment of up to $781.10 for each eligible child.
