What is a tiger tube?
A ‘tiger tube’ is a self-advancing nasojejunal feeding tube, used for short term feeding/medication into the jejunum. The tube has small, claw like flaps (see annotated image) at its distal end that aid in advancement during peristalsis.
What are the two types of feeding tubes?
In general, there are two types of tubes: nasal tubes and abdominal tubes. Nasal tubes enter through the nose and end in either the stomach or intestine. Abdominal tubes enter directly through the skin into the stomach or intestine.
What is a duo tube feeding tube?
The Flocare® Duo-Tube is a nasal, double lumen tube allowing simultaneous intestinal feeding and gastric drainage. The special design of the Duo-Tube allows the removal of one of the tubes (gastric or jejunal) while keeping the other in place, without additional endoscopy.
How long does SST tube last?
5 days
After proper centrifugation, serum can be left in contact with the gel barrier of SST tubes for up to 5 days with proper storage.
What additive is in a tiger top tube?
Blood Collection Tubes
Tube cap color | Additive |
---|---|
Light-blue | 3.2% Sodium citrate |
Red or gold (mottled or “tiger” top used with some tubes) | Serum tube with or without clot activator or gel |
Green | Sodium or lithium heparin with or without gel |
Lavender or pink | Potassium EDTA |
What is the life expectancy of a person with a feeding tube?
Patients who receive a percutaneous feeding tube have a 30-day mortality risk of 18%–24% and a 1-year mortality risk of 50%–63%. In a well-designed prospective study, Callahan et al. followed 150 patients with new feeding tubes and varied diagnoses, and found 30-day mortality of 22% and 1-year mortality of 50%.
How many times do you invert a SST tube?
Invert tube 5-10 times to activate clotting. Allow blood to clot at room temperature for 30 minutes.
How long does an SST tube take to clot?
30 minutes
Clotting instructions with minimum clotting time recommendations: Non-additive tubes (red stoppers)-60 minutes. SST tubes-30 minutes. Recommended times are based upon an intact clotting process.
What color tube top has no additives?
Red

How long should a feeding tube be left in for Tiger 2?
Alternating cilia-like flaps along the Tiger 2 help to advance it into the distal portions of the small bowel via peristalsis The feeding tube should be left in place for 30 minutes to 1 hour to allow the patient’s peristalsis to advance the catheter
What are the benefits of self-advancing feeding tubes?
self-advancing placement reduces the risk of perforation or misplacement that is seen with weighted-tipped feeding tubes and avoids endoscopy or fluoroscopy procedures Optional Torque Cable can be used to add body/stiffness to facilitate gastric placement – remove before advancing the Tiger tube beyond the pylorus
How do you secure a feeding tube in place?
Secure the feeding tube in place using hypoallergenic tape. self-advancing placement reduces the risk of perforation or misplacement that is seen with weighted-tipped feeding tubes and avoids endoscopy or fluoroscopy procedures
How long should a feeding tube be left in for peristalsis?
The feeding tube should be left in place for 30 minutes to 1 hour to allow the patient’s peristalsis to advance the catheter Pharmacologic agents may be used to increase peristalsis (e.g. metoclopramide 10 mgIV and/ or erythromycin 250mg IV) Secure the feeding tube in place using hypoallergenic tape.
