What is a torpedo snapshot?
A very valid tactic used. by some Navies is the snapshot, which consists of launching a torpedo from the ship against the. submarine, as soon as an incoming HWT is detected.

Why is it called a torpedo?
The word torpedo comes from the name of a genus of electric rays in the order Torpediniformes, which in turn comes from the Latin torpere (“to be stiff or numb”).
What is a torpedo used for?

Are torpedoes guided?
A torpedo is essentially a guided missile that happens to “fly” underwater (see How Cruise Missiles Work for details on missiles). A torpedo therefore has a propulsion system, a guidance system and some sort of explosive device.
How do torpedoes track targets?
Two acoustic transducers will react upon sound and the torpedo will detect that the signal comes from one of the side. It will then issue a command to turn towards the target. When the sound is “equal” on both sides, the torpedo will follow a straight path until it reaches its target.
Can torpedoes be detected?
While radar detection cannot be used under water, torpedoes can be detected by the sound they emit. As most warship are equiped with sonars, they can detect where a torpedo attack comes from.
What happens if a torpedo misses?
the sensor of the torpedo senses the miss and immediately detonates itself. Even if the other vessel manages not to get hit it’s going to get hit by the shockwave and perhaps the shrapnel from the exploding torpedo.
