What is the device used to close a PFO?
There is currently one device (the Amplatzer® PFO occluder) approved by the FDA specifically for PFO closure. Devices approved to close other types of holes (atrial septal defect or ventricular septal defect) can also be used to close a PFO.
How long does a PFO closure device last?
Observational studies and meta-analyses suggest that closure is associated with a benefit but evidence from randomized trials, remained inconclusive, with most analyses based on only moderate durations of follow-up, averaging 2 to 4 years.
Is a PFO and ASD the same thing?
PFO is a flap-like hole in the inter-atrial septum that can allow blood to go from the right to left chambers and could be a cause for stroke. ASD is a defect (hole) in the inter-atrial septum that typically allow blood to go from the left to right chambers and can lead to symptoms and reduced heart function.
What is Amplatzer device?
The AMPLATZER™ Septal Occluder is a percutaneous, transcatheter, atrial septal defect closure device intended for the occlusion of atrial septal defects (ASD) in secundum position or patients who have undergone a fenestrated Fontan procedure and who now require closure of the fenestration.
Can a PFO closure device move?
Migration of the closure device is a reported side effect in patients undergoing transcatheter closure; embolization of the device to the aorta is rare. Managing the migration of a PFO occluder can be challenging: it usually requires surgical retrieval of the foreign body.
What is ASD device closure?
What is a closure device? Closure devices are used to close a defect or an opening between the right and left sides of the heart. Some of these birth defects are located in the wall (septum) between the upper chambers (atria) of the heart: Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)
Is a PFO closure safe?
In our centre, we found that percutaneous closure of a PFO, which is suggested to be related to a paradoxical embolism, is a safe and effective procedure to prevent the recurrence of paradoxical thromboembolic events, independent of the device used for closure.
When does a PFO need to be closed?
What Is a Patent Foramen Ovale? The foramen ovale (fuh-RAY-men oh-VAL-ee) is a normal opening between the upper two chambers (the right atrium and left atrium) of an unborn baby’s heart. The foramen ovale usually closes 6 months to a year after the baby’s birth.
Can you have an ASD and PFO?
There are two types of holes which can be present between the upper chambers of the heart: an Atrial septal defect (ASD) and a patent foramen ovale (PFO).
Can a PFO closure device come loose?
A successfully placed PFO closure device straddles the thick muscular septum secundum with its two disks and is subsequently covered up and stabilized by endothelial tissue, so the long-term dislodgement is uncommon.
What is ASD closure device made of?
The FDA approved this device for ASD closure in 2006. 11 The device consists of a corkscrew type nitinol wire frame covered by a protective Gore-Tex (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene) coating. The success rate for deployment is high with major adverse events of 3.6% (12).
